1 loaf Italian bread, sliced (remove crusts)
8 oz grated sharp cheddar cheese
3 T. melted butter
6 large eggs
3 cups milk (or subst. 1 cup half-and-half)
2 tsp salt
2 tsp brown mustard
pepper
paprika
Butter a 9 by 13-inch baking dish; line bottom with bread slices; sprinkle with half of cheese; layer with remaining bread and cheese.
Whisk together eggs, milk, melted butter, mustard, salt, and pepper. Pour mixture into baking dish. Cover; refrigerate at least 6 hours or overnight.
Leave dish at room temperature 30 minutes prior to baking.
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Bake until puffed and golden, one hour.
Let stand 10 minutes before serving.
